Spring sees the reserve bursting into life as the delicate birch woodland throws forth her mantle of palest green leaves. And the undergrowth is patterned with the pale blooms of wood anemone, primrose and bluebell. In early spring, golden eagles perch on their nests guarding their clutch of eggs.
Spring heralds the return of the black-throated divers with the glorious markings and red-amber eyes and once again their eerie cries echo around the loch and mountains. Now too, the nearby sea eagle starts to nest and may be spotted soaring above the islands.
The weather warms and brings with it the dazzling dragonflies like northern emerald and golden-ringed dragonflies, which cluster around the bogs and rivers. Listen too for the chirruping call of the crossbill, which uses its unique beak to prise seeds from pine cones.
The beauty of the islands unfolds in the ancient and undisturbed woodland that can be seen from the shores. Much of its importance lies in the fact that there has been very little human intervention and these woodlands are among the most natural in the UK.
The majestic red deer stags are reaching their full fitness ready for the rutting season. Red deer are everywhere at this time of year and the loud roars of rutting evoke an atmosphere of earlier, more primitive times. During the rut, their roaring echoes around the hillside and islands tugging at the heartstrings.
Meanwhile the reserve is cloaked in the stunning russets and reds, golds and yellows of a Highland autumn. Now, too, the last of the breeding black-throated divers take their leave from the islands, having finally fledged their young.
Perhaps the most beautiful time to visit the reserve, as it turns to a winter wonderland with stark wintry landscapes, and perhaps a fall of snow. The dark greys of the statuesque standing dead pines are cut through with white ribbons of gushing streams.
A chance to see goldeneye on the loch. Although they don't breed here, they are welcome winter visitors. And once again to appreciate the glorious scenery resplendent in its winter garb of greys and whites, glorious light, spectacular mountains and clear blue loch speckled with dark green islands.
