Scottish Natural Heritage is committed to making its National Nature Reserves (NNRs) web site accessible to as many users as possible. This web site incorporates several features to aid accessibility.
- The size of most web site text can be changed by the user using the "text size" option available in visual browsers.
- The site has been designed so that it works in text and speaking browsers and in small screen devices such as phones and PDAs. In particular:
- images have so-called "alt" tags containing descriptive information which is presented in text and non-visual browsers,
- none of the site's functionality depends critically on graphical navigation or on javascript, and
- no information is exclusively conveyed using colour.
- On some pages, maps have been used as a navigational aid. Where this is the case, an alternative, text-based navigational method is always available.
- Users can use the Tab key to step through the clickable items on each page as an alternative to using a mouse. Once the required clickable item has been reached it can be selected using the Enter key.
- Some browsers support jumping to specific links by typing keys defined on the web site. On Windows, you can press the ‘alt’ key and the access key, followed by the 'enter' key; on Apple Macintosh, you can press the ‘ctrl’ key and the access key. Note that access keys are not supported by all browsers. The access keys available on this site are:
- S - Skip navigation
- 1 - Home page
- 4 - Search
- 0 - Access key details
Some of the content available on this web site is only available in the form of downloadable pdf or Microsoft Word format documents. Where this is the case, the title, a short summary, the file size and the format of document are provided. Adobe Reader software enabling pdf format documents to be read can be downloaded from the Adobe web site.
We have attempted to ensure that this web site complies with the guidelines published by the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C's) Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) at the highest possible level, Level AAA. See http://www.w3.org/TR/WAI-WEBCONTENT/ for more information. We are aware that maintaining such a high level of accessibility will be a challenge and that, at times, some parts of the site may fall below Level AAA compliance. We will, however, monitor the site on an ongoing basis with a view to ensuring that the highest possible level of accessibility is maintained.
Please let us know if you identify any aspect of the site that you think could be improved by contacting us.
