Green tourism

Scotland's National Nature Reserves are managed with sustainable practices that benefit both wildlife and visitors while minimising environmental impact.

We are members of the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS), which recognises, grades and promotes good environmental practice.  Our aim is to achieve the best possible GTBS ratings for our Reserve-based Visitor Centres.

Across the Reserves thirteen visitor centres are accredited to GTBS and have achieved either Gold (6 Reserves) or Silver (7 Reserves) standards.

How you can help

Please support our efforts to promote green tourism and help reduce your own impact on the environment by following these tips when visiting NNRs and other wildlife sites in Scotland.

• Travel by public transport or bicycle where possible. For public transport information, visit Traveline  .
• For national cycle network information, visit Sustrans    or contact the local Reserve office.
• Stay in GTBS accredited accommodation  .
• Watch wildlife in a responsible way and use wildlife tourism operators that follow codes of conduct.
• For information on accredited wildlife tourism operators, visit Wild Scotland  .
• Ask our Visitor Centre staff about local "Green" facilities.
